- Set in Greenland, and revolves around the effect of climate change upon fragile areas such as the Arctic, exploitation of fossil fuel resources, the rights of indigenous peoples - the Inuit in this case - who are still restricted in their control over such resources. The scenery is stunning, and the dilemmas and choices are cliff-hanging!
my comments
- I'm a bit smitten with Lena Andre (female lead) since I first saw her in the Millennium series (based on the Stieg Larsson trilogy), and also love how older Scandi actors and actress are shown as physically real and beautiful, without trying to hide the signs of ageing. For me, she never disappoints...Other fine actors too of course - and it is rich to see the signs of the Inuit culture, including welcome ceremony, language, and beaded collars...
Welcome to Sweden SBS
- Bruce and his beautiful Swedish girlfriend Emma seem to be the perfect couple, so it only seems natural that when Emma decides to leave New York to accept a prestigious banking job in Stockholm, Bruce decides to join her. When they get there, Bruce not only has to deal with the culture shock of moving halfway across the world, but also with learning to get along with Emma's strange and very Swedish family.
my comments
- I love this - the humour is delicious! I was tempted to watch when when I saw a promo with a pic of Amy Poehler (from Parks and Recreation on Stan, a feisty American sitcom with some great characters), but this series features brother Greg in this delightful cross cultural exercise. Easy and humorous watching, short 21+ min episodes - don't miss it!
- Quiz Question for the older demographic: Bruce's father is played by American actor Patrick Duffy. What blockbuster American TV series starting in the late 70's did he star in, and can you name his character? (He's still looking pretty good too, by the way!)
The Unusual Suspects SBS (Australia)
- Warm, funny and utterly gripping, The Unusual Suspects is a compelling heist caper about female friendship and empowerment. Filmed and set in Sydney's glamourous Eastern Suburbs, this four-part drama series event is now available on SBS On Demand, with all episodes available to stream.
my comments
- A worthwhile watch with some terrific Aussie actors including veterans Miranda Otto, Heather Mitchell and Peter O'Brien - doing something completely different! They must have had a lot of fun making this - you won't regret the watch!
- Critically acclaimed drama Das Boot returns with a new season, pairing three tension-fuelled storylines with intensive character studies exploring how the human soul can become twisted by war.
my comments
- Exemplary cast, writing, cinematography - wonderful to me as a European History aficionado - watched several times! Spoken language mostly German with subtitles. Story of the U-boat resonates across both 20th Century world wars
- Based on Viveca Sten's hugely popular crime novel Still Waters, and set in the beautiful surroundings of the outer Stockholm archipelago.
my comments
- I confess the visual is the greatest draw for me - and a love of the Swedish style. I am a crime/whodunnit aficionado, but this is fairly soft genre-wise, and there is nothing to offend the squeamish observer. As a textile tragic I tend to linger over the beautiful handknits, scenery, and overall ambience of the setting including the dearth of cars (travel is overwhelmingly by foot, bike or boat).
Why Women Kill SBS (USA)
- Why Women Kill details the lives of three women living in three different decades: a housewife in the '60s, a socialite in the '80s, and a lawyer in 2019, each dealing with infidelity in their marriages. The series examines how the roles of women have changed, but how their reaction to betrayal... has not. One Pasadena, Calif. house serves as the focal point for three decades worth of marital strife.
my comments
- This little gem is one I have failed to mention earlier as it has been around for a while. Tightly written, beautifully produced, and incisively targeted it is fun, beautiful and challenging to watch. Lots of humour here too, and it has Lucy Liu - need I say more!
Years and Years SBS (United Kingdom)
- Starring Emma Thompson, this audacious drama follows an ordinary Manchester family and catapults them through the next 15 years. As the Britain of this imaginary drama is rocked by political, economic and technological advances, the family experiences everything hoped for in the future, and everything that is feared.
my comments
- I confess I love this show and have watched it several times - there is so much to enjoy - a brilliant array of strong and very different characters - and the future looks terribly close!
