My furry copilot Petal, and I, have just completed another road trip together. Four days on the road and 10 days in situ for a house and pet sitting gig! I’m discovering a new found pleasure in hitting the road and viewing this amazing country from the driver’s seat. My portable pet provides a pleasant occasional rest for my left hand – and raises no alarms like some of the human passengers I’ve had! It’s a meditative and productive time, without compulsive talkers and other distractions.
|Another true cliche, “It’s about the journey, not just the destination.”
My other much-valued travelling companion is Google Maps. What a gift! As a solo traveller, it gives me a great deal of confidence to roam and explore by myself. Of course Google has to learn that I don’t always want to bypass stuff, and it has taken a few trips for me to convince it that I actually don’t care about time and traffic – I would rather stick to good roads that are well lit, rather than ‘save time’ by taking dark, dodgy roads skirting the city before I arrive at my destination. I want to see places, rather than just pass them by. Like this interesting remote NSW town, Grong Grong.
But I finally smashed Google Maps this time, and travelling home had the magical experience of driving right through the heart of our nation on a misty morning. Past the AWM on the right, past Parliament house on the left – delicious visions of this interesting and beautiful city.
I can’t wait to return!
