When did Tatty Hair become a ‘thing’?

tatty-hairSo I’m watching the TV weather this morning, looking at the female presenter’s locks, and wondering, when and WHY did this tatty look become a ‘thing’?  So what do I mean by tatty?  Well, it was curled into loose ringlets, the product of a hot wand no doubt, not that there’s anything wrong with that, per se.  But the ends looked all sort of dry and prickly, almost like they had been chewed by a lazy rat.  And it was dull, flattened and flat looking.

Nostalgia for the 80s and 90s clicked in. Where are those gorgeous, abundant glossy manes sported by the likes of Farrah Fawcett, and Jaclyn Smith?  We constructed them with masses of conditioner, volumiser, root-lifters and hairdryers.   You just wanted to touch and run your fingers through all those clean and healthy looking, glowing locks.  Whereas now, you feel you might get splinters running your fingers through that sere, sfarrah2traw-like coif.  Ouch!!!

At least the multi-coloured fashion that appeared on the heads of the au courant, resembling road-killed badger has passed, so I suppose one has to be thankful for small mercies!

Yes, we all have our bad hair days, but if working on national TV, or just going to a local soiree, we should be expected to make an effort.  Me?  Well, at time of writing, yes, my hair is a bit tatty, but if I were to pop out to the butcher or the patisserie, I would make an effort with a brush and split clip – I never want to frighten the butcher or the baker, those poor chaps have enough to deal with!

And just DON’T get me started on the mysterious mens’ fashion for shaved heads…oh my stars!!!
